Temple hosts UConn with chance to go to AAC title game

“I was proud of our guys that we won this game because this was a championship for us”, Rhule said. Thomas averaged 6.0 YPC with a long run of 60 yards.

FootballScoop reported that Missouri Tigers AD Mack Rhoades is planning to meet with Rhule on Sunday, after meeting with Toledo HC Matt Campbell Saturday. The best chance came in the closing moments of the first quarter when the Huskies went for it on 4th and 1 on the Temple 41, but Newsome fumbled after being hit hard by Stephaun Marshall. “My eyes have been bleeding everywhere else, but to see Temple be successful is always awesome and always great”, said Antonio Pelullo of Cheltenham, Pa. Up next for the Owls: They play at the University of Houston for the AAC title one week from today. But that doesn’t mean there’s not any familiarity.

Temple struck first at the end of the first quarter.

Houston defeated Temple 31-10 in the last meeting between the two on October 17, 2014. Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer (299 yards and a touchdown passing, 143 yards and two touchdowns rushing) and South Florida’s Quinton Flowers (230 yards and two touchdowns passing, 90 yards and a touchdown rushing) tore up the Owls in their two losses this season. Ron Johnson was UConn’s leading rusher with 7 yards on 3 attempts. On the next play, he delivered a ideal throw on a fade route in the endzone that was ruled a touchdown, but later overturned as Deloatch couldn’t finish the process of the catch. Kiel was 30 of 47 for 270 yards with a touchdown and interception. Thomas finished the regular season with 1,198 yards rushing and 17 rushing touchdowns. “We’ll go through our normal week”.

With the loss, CT will await their postseason destination after becoming bowl eligible with an upset win over Houston last week.

Running back Jahad Thomas rushed for 129 yards and two scores and quarterback P.J. Walker threw for 160 yards and another touchdown as the Owls manhandled the Huskies (6-6, 4-4). Temple’s leading receiver on the evening, Brandon Shippen, had just 45 yards on four catches. The Huskies managed four yards of offense in the third quarter, while the defense continued to try to push Temple away from the end zone, but with so much possession for the Owls, it was an overwhelming task. Rhule is an odd geographic fit, but his success at Temple has been so strong that there is a belief his personality could fit anywhere. He also has five interceptions this season, a new single-season record for linebackers. Even more impressive, the Huskies finished the evening with just nine rushing yards.

The Huskies added a late field goal to avoid the shutout, but the Owl’s blanked the Huskies all night. But as Thamel said, if you appear to be the real deal overall, you can overcome a lack of ties. “It’s another game. A little bigger stage, but it’s another game”.
