Temple students turn their backs during Joe Paterno tribute

Robinson was in for Saquon Barkley, as Barkley was shaken up and missed nearly the entire second quarter.

Early in the second quarter in the matchup with in-state rival Temple, Beaver Stadium announcer Dean DeVore directed an announced 100,420 fans’ attention to two high-definition video boards for a two-minute video featuring highlights of Paterno’s career.

As soon as Paterno’s familiar image – shirt and tie, thick glasses and rolled-up trousers – appeared, fans erupted and kept cheering as DeVore read from a statement highlighting Paterno’s commitment to student-athletes and academics.

The video tributes during the game came a day after the largest gathering of former Penn State football players since Paterno’s memorial service in 2012.

Players who spoke before the event said they returned to renew their Penn State football bond and, more importantly, to celebrate their coach. “It’s just outrageous that they have a celebration of Joe Paterno”.

“In spite of everything that has been said [about Paterno in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal], I come here because that’s not who I knew”, Harry Hamilton said. The teams played for the first time in 1931, and Penn State has mostly been drubbing Temple ever since.

Balloons and posters in memory of the coach were found near the former site of his bronze statue outside Beaver Stadium. It also served as a fundraiser for a scholarship the Paterno family awards to Penn State football players for post-graduate study.

“It’s a good first step and one that is good and I know they received a lot of heat for it but so what”, Harris said.

Even the most pass-happy offenses need a balance of effectiveness in the run to keep a defense honest, and Temple couldn’t establish anything resembling that against the Penn State defense.

Gordon Wild paces UMD with 13 points that comes from six goals and one assist, while Alex Cronagle is the only other Terp with multiple goals on the season, netting two.

It read, simply, “You Forgot Already”.

The Nittany Lions appeared to be driving to another touchdown early in the second quarter with the help of Miles Sanders’ 19-yard run on fourth and 3 to the Temple 9, but the freshman fumbled on the next play and linebacker Avery Williams recovered for the Owls.

“This is not an anti-Joe Paterno tirade”, Limauro, a 19-year-old Penn State sophomore and Pittsburgh native said. Court documents released this summer revealed Paterno may have been aware of the sexual abuse for nearly four decades before Sandusky was brought to trial. Paterno was never charged with a crime related to the scandal.

An investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh into Penn State’s role in the case said Paterno “failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade”. Some staunch supporters of Paterno feel like he was wronged by the university, while others critical of him have said that honoring the late coach for football accomplishments is insensitive to Sandusky’s victims and the severity of the scandal.
