Ten Percent of Pregnant Women Still Drink, Study

Doctors suggest not to drink during pregnancy, but a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that one in 10 pregnant women in the United States still consumes alcohol.

Alcohol use was highest among pregnant women between the ages of 35 and 44 years, college graduates and women who were not married. In terms of frequency, expectant moms experience about 4.6 binge drinking episodes in a month, which is higher than the 3.1 episodes for women who are not pregnant.

New research has found that many women across the United States are drinking, sometimes in binges, even while pregnant.

Many women continue to smoke and drink alcohol in spite of medical warnings.

Drinking and consuming alcohol while pregnant is not at all good for both the mother and the child inside her. It may cause adverse effects on the child resulting in health problems for the child to be born.

Most warnings are issued in relation to binge drinking, but medical experts remind pregnant women that alcohol can be unsafe at all times, regardless of the quantity.

Babies can also be affected by a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder if a mother drinks while pregnancy.

However, drinking alcohol tends to expose babies to risking developmental problems and brain damage. According to HNGN, the study said that pregnant women should stay away from any kind of alcohol. “It’s just not worth the risk”, said Coleen Boyle, director of the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Centre on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, according to Daily Nation. “So I would say to a pregnant mother that it’s probably best to abstain from all alcohol”.

Any sort of alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, premature delivery and stillbirth, said the study’s lead author, Cheryl Tan, an epidemiologist in the CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities.

“It’s really important to remember that there is no safe amount, no safe time and no safe type of alcohol to drink during pregnancy”, Tan told Reuters.
