Tennessee athletic director said he trusts coach Butch Jones
The Title IX lawsuit, filed February 9, detailed numerous sexual assault and rape accusations at Tennessee, dating back more than 20 years. Bowles and the woman called 911 and arranged to meet an ambulance.

Later that day, Maggitt confronted Bowles and “asked accusing questions”, the filing said.
Later that day, Maggitt found out and confronted Bowles. Orta told police that Jones “instructed the team to stay away from Bowles”, who was given time away from the program, the lawsuit says. When Bowles told Jones about the incident, the coach called him a traitor, according to the complaint.
But Jones said Wednesday that didn’t happen.
Bowles did say that Jones apologized a couple of hours later, but at that point, if what Bowles is saying is true, the damage had been done.
Bowles alleges that when he talked to Bowles about what was happening, the coach told him he “betrayed the team”. Hart declined to address the specific allegation and said Jones’ statement speaks for itself.
Tennessee officials had no immediate comment.
Protestors stand outside Dave Hart’s press conference.
Hart said he has tremendous empathy and sympathy for alleged victims and all victims of sexual assault.
“This is simply an unnacceptable act”, Hart said.
Plaintiff Doe IV received a message from Plaintiff Doe V who was witnessing (at that moment) several football players “jumping” Drae Bowles, a member of the football team that had actually taken Plaintiff Doe IV to the hospital the night of her assault and who had supported her decision to report the incident to the authorities. “I think anybody that would claim that they’ve got everything under control is probably drifting around with blinders on”.
“We are not the judge and jury”, Hart said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that can vouch for us”.
The lawsuit centers on six alleged rapes of female students reported between 2013 and 2015.
Here’s to hoping against hope that today was a significant step in Tennessee recognizing the problem on their campus and using all their resources to prevent the hostile sexual environment that’s been alleged and not just more spin control. There are eight women who have filed a civil lawsuit against the university who claim the contrary.
CNN’s policy is not to name victims of sexual assault or rape.
Yesterday, there was a new legal filing in a lawsuit against the school.
“The university will not allow this lawsuit to detract from those efforts”, Ramsey wrote in a statement. Five current and former Tennessee athletes were named in the Title IX lawsuit. Manning wrote that his actions were “inappropriate” and “out of line”.
“We encourage our students to report instances of sexual assault”.
The student protesters chose to unite after watching and hearing from coaches, along with administration, all week. “We have to remember that each person is entitled to due process”.
As a father of three who grew up in a law enforcement household, Jones seems easily qualified to reel in young, impressionable student-athletes prone to misconduct off the field. From left are women’s basketball coach Holly Warlick, Jones, track & field/cross country coach Beth Alford-Sullivan, swimming and diving coach Matt Kredich, and diving coach Dave Parrington.
“As the leader, yes, it hurts”, said Jones.
And he prides himself on the academic success and graduation rate of his players.
“They were honest and spoke from the heart”, Hart said.

The process for accused athletes, the plaintiffs claimed, is delayed until they can transfer to other schools or graduate without sanction or discipline. “The university has spent a considerable amount of time and concern on this topic… and I can assure you that at this university, this is discussed very frequently… and we have gone to great lengths to educate. We have to do more, we have to do better everywhere on our campus”. We support each other.
