Tennessee dismisses WR Howard from team for rules violation

Jones formally announced Wed.in that Alton “Pig” Howard was dismissed for a violation of team guidelines. Howard was suspended for the season-opener against Bowling Green & missed the last two contests accidents, together with a concussion.

He was the team’s leading receiver in 2014 with 54 catches for 618 yards and one touchdown. “We’ve got a resilient group of kids, and we’re going to continue to make progress and move forward”.

The reports of disgruntled players considering walking off the team and now the dismissal of a once highly-touted recruit do not bode well for a program that was supposed to be on the way back.

“The truth of the matter is we’re a good football team and we’ve lost to three very, very good opponents”, Jones said.

The Vols have been without two receivers (Jason Croom and Vincent Perry) for the entire season, and Johnathon Johnson and Marquez North have been limited or missed games this season.

Tennessee (2-3, 0-2 SEC) is hosting the 19th-ranked Bulldogs (4-1, 1-1) on Saturday. Who knows, maybe if we’d had Pig (and Curt Maggitt) in every game then this season wouldn’t look quite as dismal. He also had 49 carries for 246 yards and two touchdowns.

NOTES: Jones said that “as of right now”, the Vols anticipate defensive end Kyle Phillips playing against Georgia. He instead rejoined the team for summer workouts and went on to be Tennessee’s most consistent receiver in 2014.

Offensive lineman Brett Kendrick has been limited in practice this week, per Jones.
