Tennessee is trying every trick in the book to beat Florida

“He actually looked pretty steady in the pocket on those two drives”, said Florida coach Jim McElwain.

He mentions it during meetings, practices and games. But the Gators’ junior running back makes effective use of the yards he does get.

A win over the Gators wouldn’t immediately validate Tennessee as a legitimate challenger to the SEC East crown, but beating them for the first time in almost a decade would at least serve as an early sign for the Vols that 2015 still has the potential to be a special season.

“This is the Swamp”, receiver Ahmad Fulwood said.

“It’s a play we’ve practiced ever since camp started”, Grier said of the winning touchdown. They close the month at Kentucky on October. 31, playing a Wildcats team that is 3-1, 2-1 in the SEC after wins over South Carolina and Missouri.

This one allowed the Gators to extend the streak to its longest in series history.

Then I woke up Thursday morning and realized that if Will Grier stays healthy the Gators might be just fine Saturday because they’re deep enough in the secondary to get by without Tabor.

That play had to be especially delightful for Vols’ fans, given that Tim Tebow became legendary for his jump-pass prowess while at Florida. However, the momentum shifted quickly when Tennessee executed a handsome double pass trick play in which Jauan Jennings connected with Dobbs on a throwback screen that the QB ran 58 yards to the end zone. The Vols have leaned heavily on the running game with 738 rushing yards compared to 567 passing yards.

“You know, it’ll be fun”. This one’s going to have one, too. “We just felt at that stage of the game, we had great confidence in our defense of getting off the field”. When Tennessee slows down the Gators’ ground attack, Florida has no answer.

Pedro Martinez was talking about the Yankees when he said it, but it applies to Butch Jones and the Tennessee Vols as well. But if it wasn’t for streaks, we’d have less to write and talk about. Again, no player on either team has experienced so much as half of those games. “Turnover margin is the No. 1 statistic in winning and losing football games”.

The Vols are coming off of a 55-10 home win over Western Carolina on Saturday. Without Harris, redshirt freshman Will Grier will make his third consecutive start. As the leader of the program, Jones is taking much of the heat for that, which is unlikely to abate any time soon.

Defensively Tennessee is led by linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who is 12th in the NCAA and third in the SEC in tackles with 33. O’Brien was suspended the two games for a violation of team rules and policies.

The Gators have had two crowds of 90,000-plus this season (vs. New Mexico State, Tennessee) after not cracking that barrier since the 2013 game against Florida State. They would like to avoid making a change Saturday. Grady transferred to Florida this summer and has yet to take a meaningful snap. They lost seven seconds, giving them just three left to kick the field goal. Florida’s Austin Hardin has missed his last three attempts. Instead, he chose to have Medley kick an extra point. Tennessee has shown no reason to believe it is capable of putting games away that it leads late.
