At the same time, authorities have expressed concern that their ability to detect such contact has been eroded by the spread of encrypted communication.

Darlene Proxmire, Smith’s step-grandmother, said the logistics specialist was shot in the attack at the Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga.

Perry employees recognized a photo of Abdulazeez after the shooting at a military recruiting center and a Navy operations center and alerted company officials.

It was unusual for Abdulazeez to send such a link, said his friend, who had been asking Abdulazeez for job advice.

Hundreds of people paid tribute to the servicemen across Tennessee on Saturday, as well as the nine people killed in last month’s shooting in Charleston, S.C.

Two nights before the attack, he and some friends went joyriding in Abdulazeez’s rented gray convertible Ford Mustang, passing through the towns of Whitwell, Dayton and Jasper. But family members have identified him as Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, a reservist on active duty who leaves behind a wife and three young daughters, according to media reports.

We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the honorable servicemembers and police officers who were victims of the shooting our son committed on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tennessee-our community, and one we have loved for our [25] years. “The person who committed this frightful crime was not the son we knew and loved”, the statement continues.

Four Marines were killed on Thursday by a gunman who opened fire at two military offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before being fatally shot in an attack officials called a brazen, brutal act of domestic terrorism. The FBI is investigating his motives.

The 24-year-old engineering graduate wore a “load-bearing vest” that allowed him to carry extra ammunition, said Ed Reinhold, special agent in charge of the regional FBI office.

He was in the hospital two days and died early Saturday, according to the Associated Press. There is no explanation for why he targeted the military facilities.

The gunman’s family said in a statement late on Saturday he had suffered from depression, and that they had experienced shock and horror over the violence.

“He was medicated like many children are”.

Walton told Fox8 Abdulazeez had limited access to the facility during his employment.

He had also been in Kuwait again as recently as 2014 to visit an uncle, CNN reported.

It’s unknown what substances were in the man’s system at the time of the killings, but toxicology tests should provide an answer.

Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher told CNN that police followed and engaged Abdulazeez somewhere on the road after that, then again at the second site.

As speculation about Abdulazeez’s motives has intensified, his family released the statement through their lawyer decrying his actions, and said they are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.

The arrest was “important” because Abdulazeez was deeply embarrassed and seemed to sink further into depression following the episode, the representative said.

After returning from his trip, Abdulazeez reportedly purchased three assault rifles on the internet and used them for target practice. But, he added, that is not surprising.

At one point, in 2012 or 2013, he received therapy for drugs and alcohol use, they said.

“You have to do something that would set off some type of alarm”, Nunes said in an interview.

Abdulazeez, who graduated high school in 2008, was well-liked and respected by his teammates, but Emily said he didn’t recall him dating in high school or having a girlfriend.

The president of the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga said Abdulazeez’s father told him he felt blindsided and did not see any recent changes in his son.
