Tennis player Serena Williams named as Sports Person of the Year 2015

The annual award honors the athlete, team coach, or individual who, by virtue of performance and character on and off the field, transcended the year in sports. Hell Steph Curry ran away with a boatload of sports awards, and a lot of people probably thought he would take this one as well. The last grand slam was in 1988 what a job well done. This year, Sports Illustrated crowned her Sportsperson of the year. Garbine is already ranked at number three in the world and has shown she can be a force in the Grand Slam events, making it to the Wimbledon final in 2015, losing out to the great Serena Williams 4-6 4-6.

“Williams, 34, won three major titles, went 53-3 and provided at least one new measure of her tyrannical three-year reign at No. 1”. She is the youngest of five daughters in her family, including her sister, professional tennis star, Venus Williams.

To wit: a cough and cold that had her vomiting during a match at the Australian Open, which she won anyway; bone bruises in both knees – “the residue of 20 years of pounding” – a right elbow strain and nasty flu at the French Open (again, she won). “She was a terrific candidate in a year of terrific candidates”. This award has been dominated by men in recent years so it’s good to see a dominant athlete like Serena Williams win this.

The U.S. women’s national soccer team was picked by SI in 1999; speedskater Bonnie Blair in 1994 and gymnast Mary Lou Retton in 1984 were co-honorees with male Olympians. Congrats and lets get the Grand Slam in 2016.
