The Ontario government has avoided a jail strike by locking down a deal with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

A tentative deal has been reached between Ontario’s correctional workers and the province, according to the union.

OPSEU and the government met Friday with a mediator in the hopes of reaching a contract deal. As of Thursday, officials say the facilities hold 7,444 inmates or are 88% of capacity.

President Smokey Thomas has said he was concerned the managers would not be able to ensure the safety of the other staff covered under a different contract.

A potential strike by corrections officers and staff throughout the Ontario Province has been averted.

The strike deadline comes after 67 per cent of bargaining unit members rejected an earlier tentative agreement signed in late November.
