PARIS – Authorities in Paris, with an eye to security following the November attacks by armed militants, are shortening a New Year video light show at the Arc de Triomphe at midnight on Thursday and cancelling a firework display to keep down crowds.
“Unfortunately we have been forced to cancel the fireworks and all that was planned for tomorrow (Thursday) evening”, mayor Yvan Mayeur told Belgian broadcaster RTBF.
Thousands of police including increased numbers of firearms officers will be on duty as the capital ushers in the New Year tonight.
“In these circumstances, we can’t check everyone”, Mayeur said.
& Monday., both suspected of plotting an attack in Brussels on New Yr’s Eve, federal prosecutors stated.
But investigators said the police action on Sunday and Monday was not linked to the wave of deadly attacks in Paris in November which were claimed by the Islamic State group and which France says were prepared in Belgium.
According to an article in La Dernière Heure, a local newspaper, the orgy occurred sometime between Nov 21 – when the federal government’s crisis centre raised the alert level for the Brussels region to four, the highest – and Nov 26, when the alert level was reduced to three.
In the six weeks since the Paris terrorist attacks, law enforcement agencies in Brussels, where most of the attackers lived or had ties, have been denounced as slow, unresponsive, disorganised and even incompetent.
A few dozen protesters gathered on Wednesday to object to New Year festivities in Istanbul, where malls and shops feature animated Santa Claus figurines singing Christmas songs, illuminated Christmas trees and other holiday decorations that some Turks have embraced to celebrate New Year’s Eve. The attack was blamed on Daesh terrorists.

A Belgian judge has delivered an arrest warrant against a 10th suspect in the Paris attacks probe, charging him with terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group. Authorities are also monitoring overseas communications for any threats. The private NTV news channel, quoting security sources, said the men detained in Ankara on Wednesday had “frequently” moved in and out of Syria, but that security officials had been monitoring their movements for the past month.
