“All aspects of the crash remain under investigation”, the NTSB said in a statement on its review of the May 7 fatality, which raised concerns about the safety of the rapidly growing field of autonomous driving technology.

Tesla has come under fire for making its Autopilot feature available to drivers when it still is in a testing phase.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mobileye’s decision to pull out of its partnership with Tesla arose over a difference of opinion as to how the camera-based system was to be implemented.

The NTSB’s initial findings are consistent with how Florida police have already described the crash.

“System performance data also revealed that the driver was operating the vehicle using the advanced driver assistance features Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer lane keeping assistance”, the report continued.

Tesla spokeswoman Khobi Brooklyn didn’t immediately respond to e-mailed questions. Mobileye declared that the end of the collaboration with Tesla electric cars maker wouldn’t have a material impact on company earnings.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk defended the system last week, saying Autopilot saves lives even as a partially autonomous system.

The official grand opening is expected this Friday (29 July), with Tesla expected to open up its long-awaited factory in sections over time as part of its plans to meet a giant backlog of deposits put down for the Model 3, retailing for US$35,000, whose battery packs will be built at the new facility. The agency said investigators are still gathering and analyzing data from the car’s electronic systems.

Neither Brown nor the automated system applied the brakes as a tractor-trailer carrying blueberries turned left across the sedan’s path. Tesla said shortly after the accident that the car’s sensors failed to recognize the white truck against the bright sky.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is also conducting a separate investigation on Tesla’s Autopilot system.

It was also equipped with automatic emergency braking that is created to automatically apply the brakes to reduce the severity of or assist in avoiding frontal collisions. The agency sent a slew of questions to Tesla earlier this month about how many complaints it has received about Autopilot from owners.
