Tesla Motors says a new version of the Model S electric auto is the quickest production vehicle in the world to reach 60 miles per hour.

The company said Tuesday that a new battery will allow its Model S to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds – making it the fastest production vehicle in the world.

Tesla says that makes it second only to million-dollar, limited-edition two-seat hypercars like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder in terms of standing-start acceleration.

The new Model S features a 100-kWh battery pack, which allows it to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds.

The Model S P90D previously had a range of 270 miles.

The California carmaker announced the arrival of the Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode on Tuesday afternoon, and said the pure-electric auto has a 0-60 miles-per-hour acceleration time of 2.5 seconds. Existing P90D Ludicrous owners can also upgrade to a 100 kWh pack, but for $20,000, as their used 90 kWh pack will have to be recycled. The Model X P100D Ludicrous now boasts a range of 289 miles. “This is an expensive auto, but it’s what is paying for the Model 3”, Musk said.

All Model Xs come with Tesla’s dual-motor set-up driving all four wheels, and the maximum distance ranges are rated at 489km for the 90D and 467km for the P90D.

Well, it’s now past noon California time and as promised, Tesla did make a product announcement, the long-awaited and much-leaked P100D is launching now.

Tesla also has its first mass-market vehicle on the way, the $35,000 “Model 3” sedan, which has theoretically surpassed billions of dollars in pre-orders.

Meantime, first deliveries of the Model X, which made its Australian debut today in Sydney, will take place next year, including P100D versions.

Competition is mounting in the electric-car space, as more automakers are racing to release vehicles with longer ranges. The P100D with Ludicrous Mode will reach 62mph in 2.7 seconds on its way to a 155mph top speed. Tesla closed trading up 1.9 percent to $224.84.
