Tesla is struggling to get its cars to customers

Tesla Motors on Sunday announced that it fell short of its target for deliveries during its second quarter, but the electric vehicle manufacturer has an answer for that shortcoming.

Tesla stated that it produced 18,345 vehicles in the second quarter, which represents an increase of 20 percent from the previous quarter.

In 2015, Tesla had flat deliveries in the country after delivering the exact same number, 4,039 Model S units, two years in a row, based on registration data.

That number means the company missed its second-quarter production target of 17,000 cars. In the company’s first quarter, it left 2,615 vehicles on trucks, and those deliveries spilled into the second quarter. Tesla previously expected to deliver 80,000-90,000 vehicles this year.

And it said almost half of the output was in June. However, it’s also worth mentioning that the Model S and Model X deliveries were lower than the company’s Q1 figures (the former dropping 15%).

Meanwhile, Tesla is ramping up production of its first mass-market vehicle, the Model 3 sedan, which it plans to start delivering next year.

The driver of the Tesla Model X in the recent crash reportedly had the Autopilot feature engaged while driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the Bedford exit.

US regulators are now looking into the autopilot function in Tesla’s Model S cars, and this examination could lead to recalling vehicles if they are declared unsafe. The company was obligated to disclose the fatality to regulators during its third quarter but notified them earlier, on May 16, as it was investigating.

One day after the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration announced the May fatal crash of Joshua Brown in a Tesla in Autopilot mode, a MI art dealer says Autopilot was engaged when he crashed and rolled across the Pennsylvania Turnpike in his Tesla Model X.

CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged that the design of the Model X was overly complex and has proved extremely challenging to produce.
