“We’ve now received more than 325,000 reservations, which corresponds to about $14bn in implied future sales, making this the single biggest one-week launch of any product ever”, the company said.

Many commenters are pointing out that Tesla is the Apple of the automotive industry after the first unveiling of the 2017 Tesla Model 3 that opened pre-order floodgates.

“Definitely going to need to rethink production planning”, Musk Tweeted last Friday, when the orders exploded out of the gate and stood just short of 200,000.

The number of orders broke the 100,000 mark just hours after the event, and sailed past 250,000 by 3 April.

Inside, it’s got room for five adults and a tablet-style infotainment screen, plus a large glass roof and technology which includes the semi-autonomous autopilot feature introduced on the Model S. The company stated that unlike other product launches, they have not heavily advertised or paid for any endorsements.

The blog post, which is titled “The Week that Electric Vehicles Went Mainstream”, also noted this success means the world is taking a step toward a better future by “accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation”.

The Tesla Model 3 will be priced from US$35,000. Kallo expects the Model 3 to top competitors for range and performance. The deposits are refundable.

CEO Elon Musk says on Twitter Thursday that the number is still rising.

Analysts have raised questions about how long it would take Tesla to deliver Model 3 cars, after the slower-than-expected launch of its Model X sport utility vehicle late a year ago. Its current vehicles – the $70,000-plus Model S luxury sedan and $80,000-$144,000 Model X SUV – were both delayed by the company.

But people are worry about whether Tesla can deliver so many Model 3 in the future.
