Tesla Model S Fatal Crash Investigation: NTSB Said Driver Was Speeding

“Traffic-Aware Cruise Control” and “Autosteer lane keeping assistance” are Tesla’s terms for the components that make up Autopilot, a driver assist feature that the company calls an incremental step toward self-driving cars.

Tesla has also partnered with Panasonic – who has invested $1.6 billion – to supply manufacturing parts for the construction of the batteries.

In 2018, it should be noted, Mobileye’s next-generation EyeQ4 processor is expected to enter volume production.

Shares of Mobileye, an Israeli maker of driving-assistance chips and software, plummeted on Tuesday after the company said its contract with Tesla Motors would not be renewed after its expiry. In the wake of the accident, Mobileye issued a statement indicating that the crash was not of the variety that Mobileye’s current technology is capable of preventing. Mobileye has said the system was not created to deal with vehicles crossing laterally in front of it, like the truck that Joshua Brown’s Tesla slammed into while using Autopilot on May 7th. “We think that that’s not in the interest of Mobileye to continue with Tesla in that area”, said CTO Amnon Shashua, Bloomberg reports. Tesla’s driver-assistance system uses cameras, radar and other sensors to react to hazardous situations and position the auto within lane markers.

Earlier this month, Mobileye announced a partnership with Intel Corp and BMW AG to design fully autonomous cars by 2021. Since January 2016, Autopilot activates automatic emergency braking in response to any interruption of the ground plane in the path of the vehicle that cross-checks against a consistent radar signature.

Neither Mobileye nor Tesla would say which company initiated the move. The NTSB’s report did not reveal whether or not the driver’s hands were on the wheel at the time of the accident.

But Tesla’s CEO also said that the Model 3 has been designed for being easy to manufacture and battery cost should be much lower once the vehicle hits its full annual production closer to the end of the decade. “It’s not enough to tell the driver to be alert but to tell the driver why”, he said. Tesla and NHTSA have previously said the Autopilot was unable to distinguish the white side of the truck from the brightly lit sky and there was no attempt to brake by either the self-driving system or Brown.
