Tesla Model S gets new battery, 0-100 now takes 2.5 seconds

The limited-run LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder remain the two fastest cars ever produced, but the S P100D will quickly climb the rankings with its ability to accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. Tesla claims the new range topper is the longest-range production electric vehicle by far. The new Model X P100D is capable of 289 miles, up from 250 miles on the previous Model X P90D.

Electric automaker Tesla on Tuesday unveiled newer, faster and longer-lasting versions of its Model S and Model X vehicles.

Good news is, the current owners of the P90D variants can upgrade to the 100 KWh battery pack by paying Dollars 20,000 (around INR 13.42 lakhs) which also includes the cost of recycling the old batteries. But with the 100 kWh battery pack, it said the Model X P100D – as the new performance model is known – will now accelerate from 0 to 97 kph in 2.9 seconds.

But Tesla’s new, speedier cars will be much less expensive, starting at about $134,000.

Existing customers of the P90D who are yet to take delivery can upgrade to the 100kWh pack for $10,000.

Volkswagen is planning to release an all-electric auto in October that could have as much as 372 miles of range, and Porsche is working on a Tesla killer with 300 miles of range that could pop up in showrooms in 2019.

The Model X was already the quickest SUV on Planet Earth, and now, it’s even quicker.

What’s more, that very same vehicle is now the third-fastest accelerating production auto of all time.

This new Model S has a battery that is 100 kilowatt hours, with an EPA range of approximately 315 miles. In this case the 90kWh battery is recycled.
