Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous now fastest production auto in the world…

A Tesla Model S P100D equipped with “Ludicrous” mode will now go from zero to 60 miles per hour (zero to 96 km/h) in 2.5 seconds, Musk said. Tesla claims the Model S flagship is the third fastest accelerating production vehicle ever produced, reaching 60 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds.

With its new 100 kWh battery pack, the Model S P100D becomes the first production electric vehicle to cross the 300 mile range barrier with an estimated range of 315 miles on a full charge.

The new battery also is available on the Model X SUV.

Tesla customers who have ordered a P90D Ludicrous, but not taken delivery, can upgrade to the 100 kWh pack for $10,000. A nice feature: Owners of existing P90D cars can upgrade their batteries for US$ 20,000; the existing battery packs will be removed and recycled.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday the Model S P100D sedan could hit 100 from standstilll in just 2.5 seconds.

Not everyone is going to be able to buy the new Model S, but the new auto will help pave the way for Tesla’s other, much more affordable vehicle. The Model X P90D started at $115,500. The larger battery will be made available exclusively for the all-wheel drive model with the Ludicrous Mode option. It has the ability to top 0 to 60mph in mere 2.9 seconds.

Tesla has appealed to its customers that the sale of the high end models including Model S and Model X and their accessories will pay for the development of Model 3, which is the latest offering by the company. Tesla says it’s “the longest range production electric vehicle by far”. That’s because the 100 kilowatt-hour battery pack now costs more to make and is in limited production.

The Model S P100D will start at US$134,500 and the Model X 100D will start at US$135,500.

While Tesla is focused on a long-term strategy for higher volume lower price electric cars it is also not averse to eye popping performance detours along the way
