Tesla Model X Deliveries Hit Speed Bump Due to “Hubris”, Parts Shortages

Overall baseline mentions of the Model 3 are now 550 percent higher than those of the Model X. Perhaps much more importantly for Tesla, the data shows that social media sentiment regarding the Model 3 is nearly exclusively positive.

The company announced Monday it delivered 14,820 luxury sedans and SUVs in the first quarter of 2016, falling short of the expected 16,000 deliveries.

Tesla also mentions its inability to manufacture those parts in-house and that the combination of these issues have resulted in production delays for the Model X which is not something the company wants to make a habit out of.

In a press release, Tesla Motors said that its delivery count for the first quarter of the year was affected by severe shortages from suppliers for Model X parts, spurred by the company’s own hubris.

The electric vehicle maker has been slow to ramp up production of its new Model X since holding a launch event in September.

Tesla now says it has moved past production delays.

By the last full week of March, the build rate rose to 750 Model X vehicles per week. The company, however, claims that it is still on track to meet its target of 80,000 to 90,000 units delivered within 2016.

Key competitors to the Model X include the BMW X6, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne.

A third tweet from Musk added: ‘A Model 3 order gives you priority in your geography, so, even tho total count is high, ordering early will make a big difference locally’.

Telsa has received a lot of praise after it unveiled the Model 3 sedan but many of its customers who are still waiting to receive their Model X are making their disappointment public.

Orders for the highly anticipated Model 3 hit 276,000 on Saturday, just three days after the vehicle was introduced.

Deutsche Bank said it would not be surprised if Tesla’s backlog reached 500,000 by the time the Model 3 entered production in 2017.
