As expected, the Model 3 will cost $35,000 (£24,500) before incentives.

Tesla is set to unveil its latest electric vehicle – the Model 3 sedan – during an event at its design studio in California on Friday.

You can put your order in now by visiting the Tesla website. All versions of the Model 3 will support Tesla’s supercharging network (those are free charging stations that charge your cars fully in minutes, not hours).

The Model 3, Tesla’s first vehicle aimed at the mass market, was unveiled by Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk on Thursday. About an hour later, the ticker had hit 137,760, suggesting that the Model 3 may be a huge success out of the gate. Prototypes shown last night featured a panoramic glass roof and seating for five adults with the same large touch screen dashboard as other Teslas. Tesla claims a base model of the new electric vehicle will deliver at least 215 miles of electric range, go from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds and have a base price of $35,000. “The 215-mile range and low recharge times make EVs impractical for many buyers”.

The fact that 115,000 people had already pre-ordered the auto before anyone actually saw it certainly bodes well for Tesla’s hope that it will be the major seller it needs.

Although the more affordable electric auto is now available to order, it won’t begin shipping until late 2017 and is restricted to two per person, so don’t go in expecting to own a fleet of the vehicles within a few weeks’ time. “Check for details, but will include India, Brazil, SA, SK, NZ, Sing (Singapore), Ireland”, Tesla Motor CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet.

It also plans to double the number of stores it has worldwide to 441 by the end of 2017. A couple of spec from Model X and Model S have been included in Model 3, such as Autopilot.

The Model 3 will also come with “trunk space” in both the rear and the front of the auto, offering more cargo space than your average hatchback.
