Tesla officially green-lights Model S, Model X P100D

The 100 kWh battery allows the Model S to travel an estimated 315 miles on a single charge, making it the first electric auto to surpass the 300-mile mark. Customers who already have orders placed for a auto with a P90D battery can upgrade to the P100D for an additional $10,000.

Tesla has revised the Model S and added a larger battery pack which gives the vehicle jaw-dropping acceleration and a longer range on full charge. As a result the Model S P100D with the aptly named “Ludicrous Mode” will pass 60mph from rest in 2.5 seconds, earning it the title of the third-fastest accelerating production vehicle ever made. The Model X P100D, the company’s SUV, also comes equipped with Ludicrous Mode and accelerates to 60 miles in 2.9 miles.

Both vehicles, however, are not cheap. The new Model S will cost $134,500 and the new Model X will cost $135,500. Existing P90D owners can have their cars upgraded to the bigger battery, but that will cost $20,000 more-$10,000 goes toward recycling the existing battery. The previous top range was 294 miles.

This new Model S has a battery that is 100 kilowatt hours, with an EPA range of approximately 315 miles.

The P100D setup can also be applied to the Model X SUV. The facelifted sedan is claimed to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour (96.5 kmph) in a scarcely believable 2.5 seconds!

The new battery has a capacity of 100kWh, which is more than four times that of the original Nissan LEAF. Volkswagen is expected to reveal an all-electric vehicle in October that could have as much as 372 miles of range, and Porsche is working on a Tesla killer with 300 miles of range that could pop up in showrooms in 2019. The old unit will be recycled, Tesla said.

“Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development”, the statement said.

The high cost of the vehicle helps subsidize the lower-cost Tesla Model 3 that is now in development, the company said.

While Tesla is focused on a long-term strategy for higher volume lower price electric cars it is also not averse to eye popping performance detours along the way
