The company was only able to ship 2,400 units of the Model X in the previous quarter and in a statement, Tesla blames its own “hubris” for the delay.

The Model S, a luxury sedan, was launched in 2012, while the Model X, an SUV/people carrier crossover, was launched past year.

In a statement, Tesla added that its Q1 delivery count was “impacted by severe Model X supplier parts shortages in January and February that lasted much longer than initially expected”.

Tesla, the American automotive and energy storage company that first manufactured a fully electric sports auto called the Tesla Roadster, has unveiled the cheapest electric vehicle model to date which is called the Tesla Model 3. Worldwide orders for the new lower-priced Tesla electric vehicle hit 276,000 over the weekend, surprising even the company’s CEO, who says it may force Tesla to open another factory.

First deliveries are expected to occur in early 2017. Tesla won’t say how numerous orders came from the US, but Musk says in tweets that a production ramp-up should let large numbers of Model 3 customers get the tax credit.

In addition to the sheer amount of technology in the Model X, Tesla blamed the shortfall to a failure to ensure that suppliers could deliver as promised and its inability to manufacture the necessary parts in-house. After a manufacturer hits that electric vehicle sales number, the credit is phased out.

Furthermore, for the Model 3 sedan, which Tesla has said will be simpler to build than the Model S or the X, will likely not face any major production bottlenecks.

According to the planning that Mr. Musk had done earlier, he said that his goal is to produce about 500,000 vehicles in a year. In reply to a tweet, Musk said that if the preorder trend continues, he expects Tesla could more than double the number of cars reserved after “part two” of the Model 3 unveiling.

Tesla hopes that around 500,000 vehicles a year can be manufactured once production is at full capacity.
