But for eager buyers and Tesla advocates, the most important news concerned the upcoming Model 3, the company’s third generation of electric auto. That expectation was proven at least partially untrue by Tesla’s shipping forecast.
CEO Elon Musk said he’s not anxious about competition from the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt, which will have a similar price tag and range and will go on sale at one year before the Model 3. Tesla stock, which had fallen almost 40 percent since the beginning of this year, rose more than 10 percent following Musk’s comments. It definitely won’t have the distinctive falcon wing doors that Tesla’s Model X crossover has. He also noted the problem with the Model X launch where some publications misunderstood the high-end Signature series pricing as the SUV’s base price.
Musk said his company also aims to be net cash flow positive by March, and achieve non-GAAP profitability in 2016. “That’s what we did with the S and obviously again with the X”, Musk said during yesterday’s press conference. Depending on what additional rebates are available in your state, you could own a Model 3 for a mere $25,000. The hope is that this will keep costs down and allow the Model 3 to remain affordable to your average consumer, while also helping to boost company profits at a time where sales figures aren’t where they should be, ideally.
Tesla executives underscored that the Model 3 is on track to be introduced on March 31, and will begin production and deliveries at the end of 2017.
But it anticipates a Model X production rate of 1,000 vehicles a week in the second quarter of the year.
“Q1 operating expenses should increase just slightly from Q4 as we sharpen our focus on expense management”, said Tesla.
