Tesla’s new battery makes its P100D the ‘quickest production car’ ever

According to Tesla, the Model S P100D with Ludicrous Mode is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 2.7 seconds. LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, the two cars faster than Tesla in that category, have clocked 2.4 seconds and 2.2 seconds respectively to cover the same distance.

Do not worry if you now have a Model S P100D or Model X P90D, as you can upgrade to this new battery for just $20,000.

The Model S P90D previously had the longest range at 270 miles.

Further, the company says this model has achieved an acceleration time of 0-60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, making it the third-fastest accelerating production auto ever produced. The Model X P100D with Ludicrous mode starts at $135,500.

Tesla on Tuesday announced upgrades to its high-end Model S and Model X vehicles, boosting power, range and their six-figure prices. What’s more, the Model S P100D is the only model in the top three that can still be purchased new. Ludicrous mode is, of course, also included in both models, and those performance numbers are with that mode’s performance-heightened settings.

“It’s quite a historical milestone that the fastest auto in the world of any kind is electric”. According to vehicle and Driver, it takes a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with 650 horsepower a full 3.0 seconds to do the same from the factory (it’s a different story with slicks but the Tesla’s AWD system is an advantage that can’t be discredited). Or, for those who already have a P90D the upgrade can be done for $20,000.

The company also acknowledges the P100D is a luxury most won’t be interested in, but again reminds us that it helps fund the incoming Model 3. Those awaiting a preexisting P90D order can have the battery upgraded for a not-so-paltry $10,000.
