Tesla says it’s improving Autopilot by boosting radar

Other newly added features include augmented breaking that amplify’s the driver’s breaking in emergencies, radar reflection lets the sensors check for obstacles by bouncing signals on the bottom of the vehicle in front, better instrument panel messages and updates and the auto will now automatically leave the motorway if you turn on your indicator.

In a conversation with journalists on Sunday, Elon Musk said the update, which will be available within a week or two, could have prevented the death of Joshua Brown, whose Tesla vehicle crashed into a truck while in Autopilot mode previous year. However, Tesla Motors will now be using radar as the primary control sensor for Autopilot, with the system not requiring the onboard cameras to visually confirm objects detected by radar.

New restrictions of Autopilot 8.0 are a nod to widespread concerns that the system lulled users into a false sense of security through its “hands-off” driving capability.

The updated system will temporarily prevent drivers from using the system if they do not respond to three audible warnings to take back control of the auto.

Tesla has announced a number of big improvements to its autopilot software.

Joshua Brown, 45, was killed in a crash in Williston, Florida while using the autopilot technology in a Tesla Model S in May.

“The autopilot technology is not mature enough, so Tesla should provide strict guidelines for drivers to follow, to ensure safety”, Zhang said.

Following the death of a driver, Tesla has announced upcoming updates to Autopilot created to make the feature safer. According to reports published in Los Angeles Times, the crash killed Joshua Brown, a 40 year old OH resident.

However, Musk said that it is only capable of detecting anything metallic and not something that would be “large and fluffy”. “It’s about improving the probability of safety”. The carmaker also claims that having zero death or zero injuries is not entirely possible.

In addition, the software will assemble multiple radar snapshots into 3D representations of the vehicles’ surroundings, so Tesla cars can more accurately identify obstacles in their path and avoid collisions. Version 8.0 has automatic feedback from Tesla’s cars to linked GPS systems, to catalog the fixed items that the radar sees in order to prevent any future false alarms for the other drivers.
