Tesla to recall 2700 Model X SUVs over seat issue

Tesla on Monday issued a voluntary recall for Model X vehicles over an issue that could cause the third-row seats to fold forward during a crash.

Tesla actually sent a technician out to numerous affected owners who was able to replace the affected part in under an hour.

What’s interesting is that the seat backs were provided from an outside company, Futuris. The current number of Model 3 reservations is absolutely staggering and Tesla will have no choice but to get as many Model 3s manufactured and out on the road as soon as humanly possible.

The company has developed an improved recliner design as a fix for the issue.

Despite the recall, Tesla is coming off the highly successful launch of the Model 3, the electric auto company’s first vehicle priced for a broad market at $35,000. Similar tests conducted for US regulators did not result in a failure, but Tesla is still recalling Model X SUVs in America.

Tesla discovered the issue with the seats during safety testing prior to the start of Model X deliveries in Europe but said that the overall safety of the SUV was not compromised.

It goes on to say that every Model X involved should be fixed within five weeks and that the production of the seven-seat vehicle in California won’t be affected by the matter. And while the Model X doesn’t even need a recall by United States standards (technically speaking), the carmaker is asking owners not to use the third-row seats until a dealer replaces the seat backs. Previously this month, Tesla blamed the delays both on the slowness of outside suppliers, and on their own hubris in trying to add too much technology to the first version of the Model X.

Consumer Reports magazine said last October that it could no longer recommend the Model S because the car’s predicted reliability was below average. It says it expects all cars to be repaired within 5 weeks. Model X production has not been the easiest for the company, either.

The world’s biggest tech company forgot to show you something, but a few Wall Street analysts and the Fool didn’t miss a beat: There’s a small company that’s powering their brand-new gadgets and the coming revolution in technology.
