In addition to the Model S sedan, the new battery pack will also be employed in the Tesla Model X. Starting at $135,500, the Model X P100 D Ludicrous is expected to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in over 2.9 seconds, while its range has been increased to 465 km.

The Model X P100D, conversely, will do 0-60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds with the Ludicrous, offering 289 mile-range, and its tag price varies $135,500-155,250. The new battery option will extend the range of the Model S to 315 miles per charge, making it the first electric auto on the market to exceed 300 miles of range.

Tesla will begin selling the quickest-accelerating vehicle in production, the Model S P100D, CEO Elon Musk said in a conference call. The new Model X P100D is capable of 289 miles, up from 250 miles on the previous Model X P90D. With the new range, driver would be able to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles without recharging.

“I think this is going to send a great message to the public that sustainable transport is the future”, said Musk.

Existing P90D owners can upgrade to a 100 kWh pack, but it will cost $20,000, as their used 90 kWh pack will have to be recycled. This, it claims is only next to LeFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. The new battery pack is also available for the performance version of the Model X sport utility vehicle. Overall then Tesla brings excitement to the auto industry with the Model S P100D.

Tesla shares (TSLA) jumped briefly early Tuesday after Musk tweeted about upcoming product news but dropped after the announcement and closed up 0.9% at $224.93.

Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors Inc. loses millions (nearly $900 million a year ago alone). Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.

The high prices are part of the wider strategy of Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, the company believes.

A fully loaded Tesla Model X equipped with the new 100 kWh battery and Ludicrous Speed now rings up at over $163,000. But you'll get nearly 300 miles between charges and can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds which is nice
