Texans’ J.J. Watt undergoes back surgery; could miss opening game

Back surgeries are tricky, so it’s possible Watt, who hasn’t missed a game in his career, will have to sit out a game or two at the beginning of the season.

That would see Watt miss all of training camp (good thing Hard Knocks covered the Texans last year) but possibly make it back for the start of the regular season.

Watt, 27, underwent a procedure to fix a herniated disk in Houston on Tuesday and has already begun the initial stage of his rehabilitation, according to persons familiar with his situation.

Because of Watt’s fanatical workout regimen, the Texans are confident his rehabilitation will be successful, and, barring a setback, he’ll be ready to return after seven weeks.

The week 3 prime time game might not feature the best offensive player (Brady) or defensive player (Watt) in the league, which is probably not what the NFL signed up for when they scheduled this match-up. The Houston Texans’ defensive end had surgery on Wednesday to fix a herniated disc.

Watt wasn’t expected to play in any preseason games and likely would have received fewer reps during training camp this offseason. That may still be the case as Watt has 7.5 weeks before his Texans open up the season at home against the Bears. That’s more than any other player during that same time frame.
