Texans’ owner: Osweiler ‘everything we thought he would be’

They also added RB Lamar Miller from the Miami Dolphins, and drafted receivers Will Fuller from Notre Dame and Braxton Miller of Ohio State.

Learning from mistakes will be something Osweiler will have to handle accordingly this season. He forced a throw meant for DeAndre Hopkins and it was picked off by Tracy Porter of the Bears, ending the drive.

Jay Cutler was a B. While his numbers – 16-of-29, 216 yards, 7.4 yards per attempt, one touchdown, one interception and a 76.2 passer rating – were uninspiring, he was sacked five times, absorbed eight additional hits and with the Texans’ eight tackles for loss, he spent too much of the afternoon in hard second- and third-and-long situations. They were on the board, but still trailing the Bears 7-3. Cutler ended up getting hit on 13 different occasions in the game, and players like Jadeveon Clowney (four tackles) and Whitney Mercilus (two sacks) were among those who got to him frequently.

When will we ever stop the cradling of Jay Cutler?

Randy Bullock, kicking because of Josh Brown’s one-game suspension, made the extra point for the lead after an earlier missed PAT.

The Bears then went three-and-out and had to punt the ball back to Houston with 1:50 left in the half. It looks like it might pay off, as he averaged almost 25 yards on kick returns and almost 10 on punt returns. After trading punts, Detroit got the ball back on offense for their third possession of the half, and Stafford found Ameer Abdullah for an 11-yard TD grab, again giving the Lions a two-score lead.

Osweiler led the Texans to victory on Sunday, but mostly he helped provide a showcase for the debut of rookie wide receiver Will Fuller V, who averaged more than 20 yards per catch on five receptions, one of which went for a touchdown.

“We’re going to get better”, Cutler said. Look at you, Bears offense! EVERYONE else didn’t bother to show up in the second half. There was another in the opening minute of the second half, when White appeared to pull up on a route rather than cut to the right flat. The Texans closed the gap, but still trailed, 14-13. They ultimately lost by nine, but they were even with Houston in terms of yards per play (4.8).

The fourth quarter started with them finishing the drive they started in the third quarter. But with the offseason addition of rookie free agent Stephen Anderson – a leaner and quicker end who had 474 receiving yards previous year for Cal – the trio provided the Texans with several interchangeable options of pass and run. Houston offensive coordinator George Godsey is trying to get C.J. more catches in the red zone this season – an area of the field the Texans reached three times against the Bears.

How they performed matters greatly, the final score not so much.

“I don’t feel great”, Cutler said. “I think … I can’t expect people not to show emotion”. Look, it’s the NFL.

“I wasn’t really anxious about the hamstring”, he said. He did a good a good of sticking with the run. It’s when he uses that spin move that makes him effective, he’s fast he just needs to know how to leverage his speed better. Receivers did some things, Griff (Ryan Griffin) came up with a third-down catch there at the end that was important. Mercilus picked right back up where he left off with two and A.J. Bouye got his first National Football League career sack. The other two sacks came from John Simon and Jadeveon Clowney, which leaves many people questioning JJ Watt’s health.

The defensive unit suffered a major loss when Linebacker Brian Cushing went down early in the game with a knee injury. I’m not sure how long he’ll be out. Houston stays home this upcoming weekend and will host the Kansas City Chiefs.

Injuries: Brian Cushing (knee) ruled out
