Texans’ QB race still has no front-runner

The second-year Texans head coach explained his decision to name Hoyer the starter on Monday morning in detail, and had plenty to say about Hoyer winning the job in general. He apparently found his comfort zone.

Hoyer has been named the Texans’ starting quarterback, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Many claimed that another mediocre.500-or-less season was inevitable and others predicted that Hoyer would lose the job after a couple of weeks.

Mallett, 27, started two games last season, his first in Houston, before suffering a pectoral injury and missing the rest of the year.

Neither quarterback distinguished himself particularly well against the Broncos, and both failed to lead a scoring drive. Solomon remarked that Hoyer looked “like a frightened rookie” while Mallett did nothing to either lose or gain ground.

However, Brian Hoyer will be the focal point of the Texans’ offense through the first half of the season with Foster injured.

Hoyer was the safe choice. O’Brien made the announcement at his afternoon press conference.

Mallett was viewed from the outside as the sexier option, with a big arm who can make NFL throws. On Saturday, Mallett had a chance with the first-team offense to try and knock Hoyer out of the top spot.

The shock and awe took over the internet as many Texans fans groaned at the thought of the reliable 29-year-old starting under center for their favorite team. Hoyer will get the work and time he needs to fine tune that relationship ahead of the regular season opener on September 13th.
