Texans star JJ Watt has back surgery

As first reported by the Houston Chronicle, Watt is expected to be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list when the Texans’ training camp opens on July 30.

Watt is now recovering and expected to miss training camp and the preseason, but will be ready at the start of the upcoming National Football League season.

Last season, Watt played with a broken hand, a herniated disk, and started rehabbing in January for five torn core-area muscles. He returned for regular season and was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the first time.

Considering J.J. Watt looked pretty good at the ESPY’s just last week, it’s safe to assume he underwent surgery some time within the past week or so. All told, Watt tallied 76 tackles, a league-leading 17.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and eight pass defenses to help the Texans clinch an AFC South title.

Last year, Watt was kept out of preseason games to avoid injury and to keep him fresh for regular season.

MILLER’S POTENTIAL: The Texans snagged an intriguing player when they drafted Braxton Miller in the third round. Back injuries are not something to play around with and could derail Watt’s Hall of Fame caliber career. Miller was the two-time Big Ten offensive player of the year in 2012 and 2013 after throwing from more than 2,000 yards and rushing for more than 1,000 in both of those seasons.
