A Tarrant County judge has been appointed to hear the case, the sources said.

The most serious allegations are that he encouraged investment in a tech startup that’s now under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In the most serious charges – first-degree securities fraud – Mr. Paxton is accused of misleading investors in a technology company, Servergy Inc., which is based in his hometown, McKinney. KXAS says Paxton paid a a $1,000 civil fine last year after admitting he was not registered.

Sworn in this year as Texas attorney general, Paxton’s alleged misconduct reportedly occurred while he served in the state legislature.

In the meantime, with potential criminal charges looming, Paxton in his first several months as the state’s top lawyer made a name for himself as a conservative crusader on the front lines of the culture wars.

If convicted, Paxton could face significant jail time. That this all happened within Paxton’s first seven months on the job is, well, stunning.
