Texas beats No. 10 Notre Dame 50-47 in double overtime thriller
ESPN analyst Mack Brown, wearing a going-to-the-bank blue suit, was bathed in love only three years after the Orangebloods shed few tears when he left. No more “OR’ at quarterback”. It was the first touchdown pass of Buechele’s career. Buechele also had five rushes for 33 yards and a score. As has been the case for Buechele since he joined the team in January, he did not look like a freshman.

Paired with what at times was very good defense (a staple of Strong’s teams) and with a resilience that showed intangibles that Strong’s first two teams might have lacked, the results Sunday night were something Texas fans had waited to see for a long, long time – and something Texas’ opponents had enjoyed not seeing for the same period.
Taysom Hill was sharp after missing most of last season with a foot injury, hitting 21 of 29 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown.
So why change the plan in the next OT?
Strong now has a quarterback who can throw, and he can go to Swoopes as his power running quarterback. “On Sunday, we’ll see who runs out there”.
Game day is here for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as they begin their 2016 college football season against the Texas Longhorns at AT&T stadium.
Swoopes said it was not quite as glorious as it sounds.
“I just saw her and my family was really excited and it was really cool to see them [after the win]”, Buechele said. “I thought I was going to die for real”. They were a 5-7 mess, another chapter of a program that has been in turmoil ever since quarterback Colt McCoy’s arm went numb in the BCS National Championship Game seven seasons, one coach, two athletic directors and 35 losses ago. The University of Texas defeated No. 10 Notre Dame 50-47 in overtime, but getting it to overtime was the superlative.
Notre Dame was an incredible 1.9 yards per play better than average offensively last season (7.1 yppl against teams that would allow 5.2 yppl to an average attack) but they’ll have to settle for a more modest, but still potent, +1.3 yppl rating heading into this season. Sure, different coaches have different definitions of such an arrangement.
Texas stormed to a 31-14 lead in the third quarter.
“Everything is about winning”, Gilbert said. Whatever situation it was, as a coaching staff, that’s what we decided. It’s why he (unsuccessfully) tried to avoid that crowd-surfing moment and chase down Swoopes, who won the game with a Herculean superman leap across the goal line.
He even called Shane Buechele’s mom the night before to say her son would start against No. 10 Notre Dame. Rather than throw in the freshman deep in his own territory, Strong brought in Swoopes.
Hunter Jr. was taken to the locker room for further diagnosis, although he did manage to walk off the field by himself, albeit gingerly.
Just in time to save said job, however, Charlie Strong has his passer. ” ‘You’re going to have your chance”.
