Texas floods kill at least seven

Weather events this week in Texas may be producing “one of the most severe flood events” in history, in Houston, not caused by a tropical cyclone Risk Management Solutions Inc. stated Thursday.

The flood-devastated Houston area could soon get a break from the rain after a deluge blamed for eight deaths.

Drivers abandoned at least 2,500 vehicles, and more than 1,000 homes were damaged in the rain.

Among the worst-hit areas is Greenspoint, a poor, mainly Hispanic district of more than 112,000 people to the north of the city centre.

A sizable mesoscale convective system―a collection of thunderstorms that act as one system and typically last more than 12 hours―moved through the region, caused by a large, upper-level low situated across the Rocky Mountains, according to AIR.

Mayor Sylvester Turner says city offices will be closed Monday and is encouraging people to stay home and avoid high water areas.

Greg Abbott, the governor of the state of Texas has declared a state of disaster in nine counties in and around the city.

Sen. Ellis explained though Houston has experienced flooding before, the impact of the floodwaters make life “most hard for people who have the least, who don’t have access to transportation and it’s very hard for them to get out”. The statement cited flooding problems and forced the evacuation of residents and employees to another senior living community.

When asked what relief is available for Houston residents who don’t have the resources to rebuild homes, Ellis said, “We’re putting that together”, He added, “FEMA will come in, there will be some federal support, there’ll be some state support, there’ll be some local support – a lot of volunteers”.

Three shelters have been opened in the county, which has staffed its Emergency Operations Center on a 24-hour basis until further notice.

The regional utility CenterPoint Energy restored power to more than 100,000 people Monday, it reported on its Twitter page – but 20,000 people were still in the dark, and crews planned to work through the night to turn the lights back on.

The man finally swam toward Campion, and as the reporter helped him onto dry land, the auto disappeared beneath the water.

The man opens the passenger door and crawls out into the water as the reporter yells: “Leave the auto!”

Emmett said Monday afternoon he estimates 240 billion gallons of rain has fallen in the Houston area. Two dams along Interstate 10 and Texas 6 on Houston’s west side have been deemed “extremely high risk” by officials and are now under investigation; expected to reach 50% capacity by mid-Tuesday, said AIR.
