Texas Grand Jury: No Indictments in Sandra Bland’s Death

Bland’s family has disputed the coroner’s conclusion that she committed suicide, insisting Bland was happy about starting a new job and had no reason to kill herself.

The Bland family filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Texas and local authorities in Waller County in August, following a report from a medical examiner declaring Sandra’s death a suicide.

Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, has been critical of the handling of the case from the beginning and has questioned why the grand jury testimony hasn’t been open to the public. Bland’s family says they have no faith in a grand jury that’s considering criminal indictm… The failure to indict on Monday concerns charges related to Bland’s death and the conduct of jail staffers, he said.

A grand jury in Texas decided Monday not to proceed with charges against anyone in relation to the death of Sandra Bland. She was arrested following a confrontation with a police officer over a minor traffic stop.

She was discovered dead in her jail cell three days later.

“Right now, three days before Christmas, they still stand in a place where they have no clue what it is that happened to their loved one”.

She added that no one in her family was interviewed about Bland’s death during the court proceedings.

Her arrest and death came amid heightened national scrutiny of police and their dealings with black suspects, especially those killed by officers or who died in police custody.

“I can’t be asked to accept what they want me to accept without seeing anything, as a mom”, Reed-Veal told The Associated Press on Tuesday during an interview in Chicago.

Jordan said jurors would reconvene in January to consider other aspects of the case, which may include actions taken by Encinia, who Texas public safety officials say violated policies of professionalism and courtesy in his encounter with Bland.

A federal judge set the January 2017 trial date earlier this week.

“Right now, the biggest problem for us is the entire process”, her mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, told reporters.

A grand jury decided this week not to indict anyone in the case of Sandra Bland.

Dash cam footage released a week later showed Bland, who was black, refusing to get out of her auto before Encinia held a stun gun and yelled at her: “Get out of the vehicle!”

Nearly immediately after her reported death, Bland’s friends and family began publicly challenging the official police narrative that she’d taken her own life. Her body also showed no signs of injuries sustained during a struggle, a Waller County prosecutor said.

Ms Bland died by asphyxiation after using a plastic bag to hang herself in her cell, according to Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathias.

“Community reaction is pretty intense and obviously across social media there’s a lot of outrage”, Smith says.

Democratic presidential candidate Sen Bernie Sanders also lamented the decision in a tweeted decision. “How many more Black and Latino people have to die before we make fundamental change in police recruitment and training, and overhaul a justice system that is permitting police brutality with impunity?”
