Texas outlasts Notre Dame in double overtime

Starting quarterback Tyler Stewart played in the Florida State and Texas A&M games. He kept his head down and continued working to get better.

Swoopes went to work.

“The eyes of Texas shining on them boys”. He is self-made and selfless to a fault. “It doesn’t – you know, in my estimation it doesn’t do much for them if they’re sitting and watching, so I wanted to get them in early, yes”. He was running through arm tackles … The Texas quarterback lowered his shoulder and won the game. Swoopes is selfless to a fault and it’s that regard for team over self that has helped galvanize the team. Instead a true freshman quarterback led the way for Texas’s 50 point, 500+ yard eruption in the first game of a brand new uptempo offense. We’ve been down for so long. It’s part of the reason why Swoopes is quickly becoming a fan favorite.

“At the end of the day the defensive structure and what we’re doing is run through me”, he said. “When you start something, you finish it”. So, you know, I’m in the meetings. But this week, Texas Tech (at Arizona State), TCU (Arkansas) and Iowa State (at Iowa) carry the Big 12 banner in marquee games. The next game is Saturday against UTEP (1-0), with the chance to secure the Longhorns’ first 2-0 start to any season since 2012. Either way, Swoopes won’t change.

If so, Charlie Strong’s bid to rebuild the program might have a legitimate shot at succeeding, too. When I was there with Coach Sumlin, we had some really good teams.

Strong appears to have found the ideal balance between quarterbacks Shane Buechele and Swoopes. DeShone Kizer on third down, but the hit jarred the ball loose. That rarely happened in Strong’s first two seasons, but Texas looked like a different team when moving the ball against Notre Dame.

Sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson said he wasn’t surprised about Buechele’s performance and raved about the quarterback’s upside. We have many more to go. And if we don’t, then there will definitely be cause for concern when the Bevos head west next week for a meeting with Cal, which is led by former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb. “But, you know, clearly, win or lose, player safety should be at the front of this game and we don’t believe that that was the case in this instance”.

However, Buechele later made up for his mistake while leading Texas on an nine-play, 68-yard drive to tie the game with under six minutes left.

It was a noticeable difference. “He still has a lot more potential”.

Irish wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr. was placed into concussion protocol Monday as the school sent video of a crushing hit from Texas defensive back DeShon Elliott to the Atlantic Coast Conference, which deemed the hit “most likely” a target. “Sore”, came the quick answer.

The Fighting Irish still have resume builders remaining on their schedule, and they still fit the one-loss precedent set by the playoff committee. But theres no doubt about it, that play had a huge impact on the game.

Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys seems brutal on the surface, but not if one considers he has the experience edge over young Dak Prescott. Asked Tuesday if he had decided yet who would take the first snap on Sunday, Kelly said he hadn’t “figured that out yet” saying it “may be something that we discuss in the locker room”.
