Texas Sheriff’s Deputy Shot and Wounded North of Austin

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office and the Round Rock Police Department are still searching for two suspects in connection to the shooting.

A Travis County Sheriff’s Deputy confronting burglars while off duty was shot and killed early Monday morning. By 1:32 a.m. when officers arrived at Hutchinson’s house, they found his body near a creek behind his backyard with a gunshot wound.

At the hospital, doctors pronounced the Sargent dead.

Authorities at the scene said police received reports of the incident around 1:20 a.m. near Oak Meadow Drive and East Messick Loop.

Items were removed from Hutchinson’s shed.

Round Rock police are taking lead on the investigation, and there is still an active search for the suspect. They say they don’t think it was a crime targeting law enforcement.

Police are telling neighbors to stay in their homes and commuters to avoid the area near the slain deputy’s home. Investigators established a hotline for anyone with information.

“He was a gentle bear and he taught me everything I know”. Hamilton said a tip line has been established for anyone with information, at 512-671-2767.

The block where the shooting occurred remained ringed with yellow tape and red tape surrounded Hutchison’s home, more than six hours after the shooting.

Local police authorities are asking residents to remain safe in their houses, Austin’s Police Sheriff used his Twitter account to advise residents on their safety.
