Texas Tornadoes Kill at Least 11 Overnight
Eight people were killed in Garland, all at Interstate 30 and the George Bush Turnpike. Some of the cars appear to have been thrown from the highways and onto the ground. The damage stretched over about a 40-mile-long area from 20 miles south of Dallas to northeast of the city. Rain is expected off and on throughout the day Sunday.

Barineau said the tornado’s path was 2 square miles.
Authorities said the full extent of the damage from Saturday’s spate of storms was not yet known – but warned the region should get ready for another hit. Washington, D.C., could see a record daily temperature of 73 degrees (23 Celsius), New York City 65 (18 Celsius) which would break a record of more than 50 years and Orlando, Florida could tie a record of 86 degrees (30 Celsius) set in 1921. Exactly a year ago, tornadoes hit MS, killing five people and injuring dozens.
The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes hit multiple cities in the greater Dallas area on Saturday evening, and there were reports of widespread damage and flooding.
In the Southeast, two more deaths linked to weather were reported Saturday in MS, bringing that state’s death toll from severe weather over Christmas to 10. “Getting IV’s in them, just keeping them warm, talking to them, making sure there’s some support”. I think I am most amazed at the outpouring of affection and willingness to help.
About 600 structures were damaged, the majority of which were single-family homes.
Dale Vermurlen lived in a Rowlett neighborhood that sustained heavy damage.
“A variety of risky weather conditions will continue across the middle of the country through Sunday”, the National Weather Service said.
“This is a huge impact on our community and we’re all suffering”, he said.
The emergency manager for a county south of Dallas confirmed on Twitter that some homes were destroyed during the storm. “Please do not get out on the roads if you do not have to”. Nearby, Harvest of Praise Ministry was also damaged.
Kevin Taylor, a church pastor in Glenn Heights, south of Dallas, described to WFAA how his church began collapsing around him.
Police officers in Garland are now trying to determine whether they were any other casualties at the crash site.
Early Saturday afternoon, the weather service had issued a tornado watch for seven counties in western Arkansas: Crawford, Franklin, Johnson, Logan, Polk, Scott and Sebastian counties.
About 15 minutes later, the weather service called off the tornado warning.
Two additional deaths occurred about 17 miles to the north in unincorporated Copeville.

Gov. Susana Martinez declared a state of emergency Sunday in response to the snowstorm.
A tornado is reported to have gone through the suburb east of Dallas, damaging several homes. Some fans were caught in drenching rain on their way into the building.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, received about 6 inches of snow and saw almost 200 weather-related accidents Saturday.

Amarillo received only about 3 inches of snow overnight but high winds have caused 3- to 4-foot drifts.
