Texas voters head to polls for Super Tuesday primary choices

Elections officials say turnout in Virginia’s Republican presidential primary was substantially higher than it was in 2008, the last primary in which no incumbents were running.

Notices will be taped to voting booths of names of candidates who’ve officially withdrawn from Virginia’s primaries. Besides Clinton and Sanders, I-Vt., the Democratic ballot also included former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who also has dropped out.
Virginia – a battleground state with scores of delegates up for grabs – is one of almost a dozen states holding primaries on Super Tuesday.
More people voted early this year than in 2012 – the last presidential election year. In the Commonwealth, voters are not constrained by affiliations made years ago.
Although the Republican Party of Virginia initially wanted voters in its primary to sign a form stating they were Republicans, the party backed off the pledge after a public outcry, as well as criticism from GOP front-runner Donald Trump and his supporters.
Cruz asked that his rivals “prayerfully consider” whether to keep going without mentioning Rubio or Ohio Gov. John Kasich by name.
Continuing in their battle for the Democratic nomination are Hillary Clinton and Bernie Saunders.
Turnout was heavy through the late afternoon in Culpeper, located about 70 miles outside the nation’s capital.
Nicole Freed, a disabled Army veteran who served in Iraq, said she cast her primary ballot for Republican Marco Rubio with the simple aim of knocking Donald Trump off the Republican ballot in November.
Texas’s results will be posted on the secretary of state’s website.
“She sure knows what’s been going on and what’s happened in the past, ” she said. Student IDs from in-state colleges and universities are also allowed.
Victoria Demaire, 21, a volunteer for Cruz’s campaign, expected him to do well because he’s “a constitutionalist” and many local voters have “tea party values of limited government and fiscal responsibility”.

“I don’t think the primary really predicts anything for the general election”, Kondik said. “I think that it’s great to be involved politically, but it’s more important to be intentional about that and work for a candidate you believe in”. “I’d like someone new”.
“Her husband was pretty good, so I want to give her a chance”, said Adrian Harris, a Richmond resident. Fewer people voted in the Democratic primary that year and the falloff was lower, but it was still significant, dropping 26.8 percent from the top statewide race to the bottom one.
