Texas will play two quarterbacks in opener, Charlie Strong says

While speaking at Texas’ media day, Charlie Strong announced that the Longhorns will use two quarterbacks during their opener against Notre Dame.

Heard, who led Denton Guyer to two Texas state high school titles, redshirted as a freshman.

So in a ideal world expect no quarterback controversy, with Strong repeating his quote that he doesn’t want to play “musical chairs” with the quarterbacks. One of them should emerge as the clear starter for the game, Strong said, but both will get on the field at some point.

Last season, Swoopes played in 12 games, taking over as the Longhorns’ starter in Week 2 after an injury to David Ash. He completed only 58 percent of his passes for only 6.27 yards per attempt while throwing 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptons. The Longhorns haven’t won the league crown since 2009 and are not expected to contend this year.

Heard, a dual-threat quarterback, was a four-star member of the Longhorns’ 2014 class.

Strong’s first season began with a series of suspensions after a rash of arrests and team rules violations.
