Thai authorities downplay Zika risk, worried by tourism impact
On Sunday, the Health ministry said 21 new cases of Zika had been confirmed, with a lot of them in the Sathorn neigbourhood of the capital. On Sept 3, it recorded its first locally transmitted Zika case, a 61-year-old Sabah man who did not have any recent history of travel overseas and later died of heart-related complications.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed the nation’s seventh imported case of Zika virus infection in a 20-year-old woman from Singapore who arrived in Kaohsiung on September 3. The patient was a 47-year-old woman who had not travelled to any Zika-affected areas.
“Mother and newborn are safe”, he said, adding that the pregnant woman’s husband had recently returned from Singapore.
Government Spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the public should not panic over the spread of Zika virus in Bangkok because there were only about 20 cases and infections were not fatal.
SCHOOLS in Malaysia have been instructed to cancel any upcoming school trips to Singapore and the Philippines due to the recent outbreaks of Zika in both countries.
“Our blood bank is creating a protocol to reduce the risk of people getting infected by the Zika virus through blood donations”, he told reporters after officiating MIC’s 70th anniversary celebrations here today.
Members of the public may refer to the website for updated information on the number of reported Zika cases and ongoing clusters.
Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam said more cases are expected to arise out of Johor due to its proximity to Singapore.

A potential new cluster was found in the Jalan Raya/Circuit Road area, involving one new case. The area being sprayed is bordered on the west by Dodson Street, the north by Island Avenue and the south by K Street. The remaining four cases have no known links to existing clusters.
