‘Thank You’ For Explaining Democracy To PM: Rahul Gandhi on Arunachal Pradesh

In a press release on Wednesday, the PPA said that after studying the verdict of the Supreme Court of India quashing the Sixth Session’s summons and message of the Governor and the proceedings thereof, the route to power for the former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has become more hard.

The court quashed Governor Rajkhowa’s decision to advance the Assembly session by a month and said the Governor “cannot interfere in the activities of the Assembly”.

Party managers are in Itanagar discussing, sources said, whether the rebel lawmakers should remain in the state till Mr Tuki’s Trust Vote or be flown out to ensure none of them drifts back to the Congress, drawn by the Tuki government’s reinstatement by the court.

The court quashed President’s Rule imposed in the state and all the decisions taken by Governor Rajkhowa leading to its imposition.

“In obedience of the Supreme Court judgement of July 13, the Governor has informed Nabam Tuki that he stands reinstated as the Chief Minister of the state on and with effect from that date”, Raj Bhawan Spokesperson Atum Potom said.

“On the basis of Supreme Court’s Judgement, I assumed my Duty today and going back tomorrow to Arunachal Pradesh to meet people over there and do developmental activities in the state”, he told ANI here.

The entire opposition hit out at the Modi government, accusing it of “misuse of power” and “transgression” of constitutional structure while BJP criticized the verdict wondering whether it strengthens or weakens democracy.

The central government is unlikely to challenge or seek review of the ruling of the five-member bench of the Supreme Court. “It paves way to protect healthy democracy in the country”, Tuki said.

Thirdly, the bench said “all steps and decisions taken by the Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh in pursuant to Governor’s order of 9 December 2015, are unsustainable and liable to be set aside and as such it is set aside”.

In a big blow for BJP but a big win for democratic federalism, yesterday the Supreme Court directed a status quo ante in Arunachal Pradesh as it prevailed on December 15, 2015. Justice Lokur and Misra wrote separate concurring judgments.

Pul, addressing a press conference here, also claimed that he has majority in the assembly and will prove it on the floor of the house when required. The controversial session saw 21 dissident Congress MLAs, 11 BJP legislators, and two Independents gather at a community hall for an impromptu session chaired by deputy speaker T Norbu Thongdok and “impeach” Rebia. Of the 47 Congress MLAs, 14 were disqualified by the Speaker.
