“Thank you”: President Obama prepares to leave office, but not American politics

Former President Barack Obama delivered his first speech after the inauguration of Donald Trump, touting his legacy and the power of hope amongst his supporters.

As we contemplate the end of President Obama’s time in office, our outgoing commander-in-chief received a very special goodbye from none other than Ellen DeGeneres, the queen of daytime talk. But perhaps the decision to wear a decidedly formal and monotone ensemble could be considered as an intentional move on Obama’s part, in order to shift the spotlight on the incoming First Lady and encourage a peaceful transition to the new administration. He said despite his party’s devastating losses in the election, he was confident in the country’s future, and added, “This is not just a matter of “no-drama Obama”; this is what I really believe”. But when I saw the trouble our country was in, I knew I couldn’t stand by and watch any longer.

That includes rescinding Mr Obama’s order that allowed more than 700,000 people brought into the U.S. illegally as children to remain in the country on a two-year authorisation to work and attend college, said several people close to the transition team.

But he said that didn’t mean he wouldn’t be following Trump’s presidency closely. Spurring intense conversations regarding gun control in America, not only did this moment show that this is an issue the President cares deeply about, it also showed his human side, that he has empathy for those who are mourning their loved ones due to this senseless act of violence. While he is sworn in, the staff goes to work stocking the pantry, loading his shampoo and conditioner into the bath, making his bed, hanging his clothes, and unpacking and placing every last item the new president has packed. As – as cool as the hardware is, and we’ve got cool hardware, as cool as the machines as weapons and satellites are, ultimately it comes down to remarkable people, some of them a lot closer to Malia’s age than mine or Michelle’s.

For them, I offer this small thought of comfort.

Within hours, two petitions had been created on We The People – to release Donald Trump’s tax returns and for him to fully divest from his business interests.

And you got to know each other. “Lifting these restrictions will greatly help American workers, increasing wages by more than $30-billion over the next 7 years”, the website said.
