Turkey prices jumped 6.4 percent after the worst-ever outbreak of avian influenza wiped out millions of the birds.

The National Turkey Federation (NTF) said a federal weekly survey of advertised retail prices for frozen turkey hens showed an 18 cents-per-lb. drop, and remains a penny cheaper per lb. compared to the week before Thanksgiving a year ago. A turkey weighing 16 pounds will increase to $23.04 from $21.65.

Also included in the estimate, green beans ($1.52), pumpkin pie (materials), milk ($3.25), whipping cream ($1.94), cranberries ($2.29), sweet potatoes ($3.57), stuffing ($2.61), and vegetables($0.79).

Every year, we gather around a beautifully decorated table with our family and friends to enjoy a big meal for Thanksgiving.

However, turkey prices are dropping as Thanksgiving draws closer, the group said. But there were a few items up from a year ago.

This year’s survey was conducted over 32 states by 138 volunteer shoppers, who were instructed to look for the best prices and not to use coupons or other promotional deals.

On the subject of Thanksgiving foodstuffs, the National Farmers Union released its Farmer’s Share of the Retail Food Dollar report for the holiday on Wednesday.
