Thanksgiving Travel: 42 Million drivers expected due to lower gas prices

Consumers remain cautious about finances despite an improving economy, and lower gas prices are “enabling families to kick off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving getaway”, according to Marshall Doney, AAA president and CEO.

More than 46 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving – a 6 percent increase from past year, according to AAA.

Park Superintendent, Becky Bariola, said the 60-room Lodge at Mount Magazine State Park and the 13 guest cabins are completely booked for the four-day holiday weekend that begins tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day.

On Wednesday, GasBuddy.com listed the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Kansas City metro area at around $1.78.

“I don’t know what he or she is going to spend it on, but it’s a substantial amount of money”, he said.

The Auto Club last week said Southern California was looking at $2.80 averages.
