The 2016 Democratic convention

Kaine, 58, was long viewed as a likely choice because of his resume in government and his time as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. But campaigns for Sanders and Hillary Clinton worked out an agreement to create a “unity commission” to revise the nominating process, including changing superdelegate rules. The agreement won near-unanimous support.

It adds that if delegates arrive too early, they “will have nothing to do for hours”. The DNC runs July 25 to 28 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She started dancing and saying “Kaine!”

Delegates will vote on the Democratic platform and rules that day. But some of Vermont Sen. She also described him in a way she’s previously characterized herself, as “a progressive who likes to get things done”.

Kaine accepted Clinton’s offer to be the candidate for vice president Friday night. It was obtained by The Associated Press.

Delegates are expressing concerns about the meeting’s timing. Solomon leads the Bernie Delegates Network, a loose organization of more than 1,200 delegates.

“My running mate is a man who doesn’t just share those values”.

His bipartisan roots, the Clinton campaign believes, could resonate with voters seeking an alternative to Trump. “I’m excited for us to get to know one another”.

Despite their occasional policy discordancy, Kaine and Clinton have hired some of the same staffers in recent years.

There was his childhood as the son of a Kansas ironworker and education at a Jesuit boys schools.

Before entering politics, Kaine was an attorney who specialized in civil rights and fair housing.

But unlike the famous real estate mogul on the other side of the political aisle, Kaine argued, his heart was in the right place.

Joining Clinton at a rally in the battleground state of Florida, the bilingual Kaine peppered Spanish-language phrases into a speech focused on introducing himself to voters unfamiliar with the low-key USA senator from Virginia.

Kaine was the choice over Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a longtime friend of the candidate and former President Bill Clinton.

Tim Kaine as her running mate at a South Florida rally Saturday.

In June, she called the Republican nominee a “thin-skinned, racist bully”; in turn, Trump said the MA senator was “very racist” for claiming she had Native American heritage while teaching at Harvard University in the 1990s.

Clinton’s slogan Saturday was “Stronger Together” – a line that coincidentally matches one recently deployed by the Miami Dolphins.

The emails detail the acrimonious split between the Democratic National Committee and Clinton’s former primary rival, Sen.

Wikileaks’ posting of the emails didn’t disclose the identity of who provided the private material.

“I’m grateful to you, Hillary, for the trust you’ve placed in me”, Kaine said.

The streets are freshly swept, the hotel rooms are pristine, the party invitations have gone out and extra police patrols are assigned.

That unity is in contrast to the fractures that were on display during the GOP national convention in Cleveland, when U.S. Sen.

But tougher to clean up and shine is the state’s political image.

Trump immediately sought to highlight the potential Democratic Party divisions the Kaine pick could magnify.

“Donald Trump is scary as hell”, said Corey Drews, a 26-year-old FIU student from Miami who attended the rally and who’s not voting for Trump despite being registered Republican.

Clinton said the most important qualification in choosing a running mate was selecting someone who could step in and become president if necessary. But minor controversies have flared over his acceptance of paid travel and gifts. In 2015, Kaine again joined Warner and a group of East Coast senators pushing an offshore drilling plan.

Kaine is popular in Virginia.

The audience at Florida International University Arena enthusiastically embraced the ticket and seemed particularly to enjoy those moments when Kaine flashed his bilingual skills. And he hails from a swing state, which theoretically should help nudge Virginia’s electoral votes into Hillary’s column.

In Spanish, Kaine reiterated Clinton’s pledge to push for immigration reform in the first 100 days of her presidency.

Kaine also talked about gun violence and serving as governor during the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech. His selection completes the line-up for the general election.
