It’s always easy to figure out which TV studios and actors turned up to dine with and kiss the rings of the Golden Globe deciders.
Leonardo DiCaprio earned a best actor nomination for The Revenant, The Martian was nominated in the comedy categories and Sylvester Stallone was nominated for his supporting role in Creed.
Some of the actual best actresses: Brie Larson (“Room”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) earn Best Actress, Drama nods.
Aussie apocalyptic blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road, revenge thriller The Revenant and harrowing kidnap tale Room and Spotlight have also been nominated for the best motion picture drama award. He essentially played himself in the film, though he had to pull off some comedic scenes as Hader’s best friend in the flick.
The Golden Globe nominations showed it’s anyone’s game this year.
“The Irish film industry boasts some incredible talent and it is great to see this recognised internationally”, said Arts Minister Heather Humphreys.
Carol, the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young shopgirl in the 1950s, garnered five nominations including best drama film, director, score and acting nods for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Interestingly, sci-fi film The Martian somehow managed to grab a nomination for Best Motion Picture, Comedy, and Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Comedy for Matt Damon – now that’s range.
Idris Elba earned a best supporting actor nomination for his searing turn as the leader of a group of child soldier rebels.
The Big Short also landed two best actor nods for Christian Bale and Steve Carell, and best screenplay for Charles Randolph and Adam McKay.
“Those trends don’t cover all the Globes” eccentricities – no limited series nomination for Show Me a Hero, for example, even in a less competitive category – but they do explain some of them. “We set out to make a film that would help us better understand our children, but never imagined it would have the impact that it has, and we could not be more thrilled or filled with JOY to receive this nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press”, says director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera.
It comes as no surprise that “Mad Max: Fury Road” is continuing to be a recurring nominee during the award season.
Though some questionable category decisions left less humorous films competing for best comedy or musical, two of comedy’s top stars will crash the party: Melissa McCarthy and Schumer.
Davis was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role in ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder.
“The Golden Globes are encompassing a lot of what’s going on in film”. Al Pacino (“Danny Collins”), Maggie Smith (“The Lady in the Van”), Jane Fonda (“Youth”) and Helen Mirslren (“Trumbo”) all earned nods.
The nominees for best TV comedy are Casual, Mozart in the Jungle, Orange Is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent, and Veep.
