‘The Angry Birds Movie’ Nests Atop the Box Office

Rounding out the rest five out of 10 most popular films were “Money Monster” (7 million dollars), “The Darkness” (2.3 million), “Zootopia” (1.7 million), “Huntsman: Winter’s War” (1.2 million) and “Mother’s Day” (1.1 million).

In it’s third week, Captain America: Civil War is still doing extremely well.

Viewers may recognize some of the characters from the smartphone game by the same name, as “The Angry Birds Movie” topped the box office this weekend, bringing in an estimated million, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

Rovio Animation spearheaded the production of The Angry Birds Movie, which cost around $73m and opened strongly internationally last weekend.

The Angry Birds Movie features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride and, as an attempt to create a compelling story out of a fairly simplistic app-based game, has received mixed reviews from critics. In fact, another report states that foreign grosses of the movie (which amount to 74.2 percent of total grosses) have already gained $112 million, with a grand total of 1 million worldwide.

That action-packed blockbuster and its cast of Marvel superheroes raked in another $33.1 million over the weekend for a cumulative total of $347.4 million after just three weeks in theaters.

“Neighbours 2” brought in only $21.8 million – less than half of the first film’s $49 million opening in 2014. Even in his third weekend in theaters, the superhero proved mightier than R-rated comedies Neighbors 2 and The Nice Guys, both of which underwhelmed.

“Neighbors 2”, which saw Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron return, wound up with a B Cinemascore and played well to younger audiences with 61% of attendees under 25 and 51% female.

“The upcoming Memorial Weekend will boast two solid wide release newcomers with “X-Men: “Apocalypse” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass” each expected to perform well and in combination with the abundance of widely different content should be a big draw over the extended period that previous year saw the debut of ‘Tomorrowland,” he noted.
