The beauty and tragedy of ‘The Light Between Oceans’

“The Light Between Oceans” amounts to a two-hour struggle between talent and substance. Although we all agree that Moon So-Ri looked ravishing, the 42-year-old managed to capture even more attention after she fell in front of the cameras.

“‘Summer camp’ is something I’ve used to explain filmmaking to friends and family”, Vikander recently told Entertainment Weekly of filming with her boyfriend.

As the plot unfolds, the three main characters ride a punishing seesaw of hope/tragedy, and every time they hit the ground someone makes another cringe-worthy decision.

Alicia Vikander made a stylish impression at the premiere of The Light Between Oceans during the 73rd Venice Film Festival at Sala Grande in Venice, Italy, on Thursday. Writer/director Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine”, “The Place Beyond the Pines”) adapts M.L. Stedman’s best-selling novel with a determined earnestness and a rock solid cast.

Another festival premiere Thursday, for the Cinema nel Giardino non-competitive section, was Gabriele Muccino’s Summertime, a drama about two young Romans who fly to San Francisco to spend a week with two Americans, a homosexual couple, they barely know. The peasant-style dress featured a plunging neckline, a black floral bodice, flowing metallic sleeves and a layered frilled skirt.

At a photo call earlier in the day, Vikander stunned in a low-cut printed maxi, pulling her hair up into a romantic pony and looking lovingly at her man, who went casual in a blazer and dark jeans.

The story, set in Australia in the 1920s, is the tragic tale of a lighthouse keeper, played by Michael Fassbender, and his wife (Vikander), who have suffered two miscarriages when a baby in a boat washes ashore their remote island.
