‘The Brink’ renewed for season 2 by HBO

In terms of network programming it fills the power vacuum left by Emmy victor “Veep”, created by political satirist Armando Iannucci-though that too has a new season ordered by HBO-and for its “live” US audience, “The Brink” airs directly after the second season episodes of wildly popular series “True Detective“.

The Brink opens as a rogue general seizes control of Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal, the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of three improbable Americans: Secretary of State Walter Larson, lowly Foreign Service officer Alex Talbot and ace Navy fighter pilot Zeke Tilson.

HBO has not yet confirmed an episode count or premiere date for the upcoming second season. From the churning streets of the Middle East, to the White House situation room, through the chaos around them, these three endangered individuals must pull to an aircraft carrier on the Red Sea to save the planet from a possible World War.

The Brink, whose road to HBO’s schedule started with an email to [Jerry] Weintraub containing the script by former Weeds executive producer Roberto Benabib and his brother Kim Benabib, took only four to five months from that day until the project received a series greenlight in February 2014 – an unusually quick turnaround. Maribeth Monroe, Carla Gugino, Esai Morales, Geoff Pierson, Aasif Mandvi and Eric Ladin all co-star.

HBO will be bringing back one of its original series. The cast’s options were set to expire tomorrow and had already been extended a week.
