“We can not tell at this moment whether the viruses found here cause more or less severe disease than those in South America”.
There are now 2,964 cases of Zika virus confirmed in the continental US, as well as another 15,809 in American territories, according to the Center for Disease Prevention And Control’s (CDC) most recent update published Wednesday. There have been no reported cases of Zika virus contracted from a mosquito bite in Missouri. It’s not clear if the virus has somehow changed, or if doctors were simply missing the consequences of Zika infection because it had not infected large numbers of people all at once before.
“It does raise the possibility that there was potential exposure to the blood and bodily fluids of the index patient, and that could have led to transmission of the second case”, Alexander Kallen, MD, a CDC medical officer, told The Washington Post.
There have been less than five cases of people from Northern Ireland diagnosed with Zika virus since 2015, the Public Health Agency has confirmed.
Thailand is combating the risk by misting and spraying mosquito-infested areas, said Anuttarasakdi Ratchatatat, epidemiologist at the health ministry’s Bureau of Vector Borne Disease.
Mishori said because the Zika virus outbreak continues to evolve, it’s important that family physicians remain vigilant about educating themselves after the webinar concludes with updates from the CDC (www.cdc.gov) and resources from the AAFP.
Mosquitoes are spreading the virus in seventy countries and territories, mainly the Americas and Caribbean, according to the WHO.
The total number of non-travel related Zika cases in Florida is now up to 70.
The Riehle Lab at the University of Arizona houses thousands of mosquitoes, about 50 of which researchers intentionally infected with Zika.
In most people, including pregnant women, it is benign with mild or no symptoms. As of now, public health experts say it’s unlikely, but admit they can not explain how the person in Utah with no risk factors got the virus.
The infection is more serious for pregnant woman as there is evidence it causes birth defects – in particular, abnormally small heads (microcephaly).
The man had roughly 100,000 times the usual amounts of the Zika virus in his blood.
Links to other neurological complications are also being investigated, World Health Organization added.

“That particular mosquito is just not almost as effective as a vector in most situations, so that gives us reason to be optimistic that we will not see local transmission in Georgia”, O’Neal said.
